even with the world cup being on i’ve been super busy the past few days. i’ve got a load of great stuff to blog as soon as i grab a few minutes, but this just jumped straight to the top of the pile. i’ve been waiting for eli escobar’s contribution to the white light mix series for a minute, and now, it’s finally arrived. ever one to keep us on our toes, he’s declined to provide a tracklist. that dude. i can’t wait to get home and listen to this while watching rsa vs uru (i only deal in abbrvs).
“I don’t like to talk about anything I do too much but I will say I tried to create a mood of some kind with this mix. Music that would sound pleasing on the road, early in the morning I suppose. I don’t have a driver’s license but if I did I would listen to this kinda stuff in the car. I didn’t put a track list because I really appreciate the element of surprise and I think it makes the listening experience a lot more rewarding.”

i don’t know what happened there. is it tuesday already? and june? wow. well my excuse is that i had a busy weekend and stuff. you know, the combination of clubbing, planning a wedding, day-to-day domesticity and plain old work can be pretty time consuming. not that i’m complaining – life is good and the weather is warm. so this, which landed in the past 24 hours, is perfect. it’s another great addition to the white light series, from villa. it’s full of soul, and i’m talking about that painful, makes you cry kind of soul. the sort you want to listen to when it’s so hot you don’t want to move, and just want to sit in the shade and reflect.
“The White Light mixes are, ultimately, about two things: music and space.” Thats what the website tells me. In that case white might be the color of music, because going through my record music collection – everything seems to go about music and space. At first i had a playlist of over 4 hours of music, I started over again, inspired by the second theme. “White Light will always be about night driving” I read. So i made three categories: Landscape Driving, Autobahn Driving & City Driving. Upload your ipod, take your car and join us on this ride.

unfortunately, though my girlfriend is flying there with friends next month, it’s more than 20 years since i’ve been in new york. i’ve since been to boston, southern california and chicago, but a second trip to the big city of dreams has not been in the equation. that said, i think i get what rub maestro dj eleven is saying about his contribution to the white light mix series with respect to not driving. over the past let’s say 13 years, most of my listening has been while sat on buses or while walking. i can listen to a mix or album and picture exactly what point of my route i was sitting on the first time i listened to it. so while my route isn’t as exciting as the one described in the blurb below, dj eleven, i feel you.
When Matty C first told me about the White Light series, he kept coming back to a description of listening to music while driving at night. Since most of us in New York City don’t drive, traveling music has to be approached differently. So I set out to make a mix from records I never get a chance to play out that would provide the perfect soundtrack to the walking, turnstile hopping, dude-selling-his-beat-tape-out-front-of-Fat Beats-avoiding, taxi-hailing, dollar-van-riding, slice-grabbing, coffee-on-the-run-drinking, and then walking a little more that is getting around the Rotten Apple.

i’ve been away for a bit – but my excuse is that i’ve just moved house and i’ve no internet yet. PAINFUL. i popped back home yesterday and picked up a few things of interest.
first off, my new favourite label has just thrown something out there for the seeds. solid bump’s first output of the year is a track called passion from meroz, who you may recall had a remix on laberge‘s this feeling ep. it’s a great filtered house effort that’s fast and chunky enough to fit in those late night sets. they’ve also got a great interview with some of his influences on the label’s blog.

another recent favourite, riva starr, was the contributor on bbc’s essential mix last weekend, and, being the dude that he is, riva put the mix up on soundcloud. what a legend. check it here.
finally, the ever-delightful white light mix series was extended with a great mix from your boy brian. as usual, it’s a deramy trip to disco heaven.
White Light 19 – Your Boy Brian
This mix was a pleasant departure from all the commercial gigs i’ve been taking on lately. It’s sorta paced like a movie / square rpg; little peaks and valleys, a few bittersweet melodies, a cathartic finish and then the credits roll. It’s also makes for decent listening while you’re doing crossword puzzles.
The xx – Intro (extended edit)

so i’m up crazy early (for me) in the hope of getting some lcd soundsystem tickets, and of course to kill time i’m snooping around the innanet. just killing time, as you do. lo and behold i find the latest instalment in the delectable white light series. boom. just what you need to perk you up on a drab january morning.
this time it’s dubsided a&r mr neoteric, taking the reins for his third contribution to the series. from the looks of things, this one won’t disappoint. kicking off with aeroplane‘s remake of st etienne‘s simply gorgeous only love can break your heart, it can’t go wrong. i’m also noticing a remix of da hardy boyz, some new shazam and of course, you can’t go wrong with some eli escobar.
and yet again, i’m blogging about the white light series. gosh, damn. another entry for curtis vodka, i can honestly say i only know one of these tunes. i even wrote about it here. this mix might go hand in hand with my 5am playlist i mentioned a while back – only on a more electronic and less whiny-indie kinda buzz. as usual, be sure to check out the other mixes at the site.
When doing this mix, I decided to take it a little slow. I have been running low on energy due to our weather up in Alaska. This could be perfect for a slow day or when you are not done partying at 5-6am in the morning!

i love it when the internet makes this easier. i was thinking to myself, where the hell can i find a mix of the weekend? getting rusty with old age. but sure enough, just as the summer has finally arrived (in september), this delightful mix has surfaced today like warm sunshine on your tent after an hour of solid rainfall. i’ve been digging this series for some time now, and this one doesn’t look like it’s about to buck the trend. what really bugs me about this latest white light mix, from smalltown djs, is the opening track – dubtribe soundsystem’s do it now. a lot of people claimed it was an influence on the juan maclean‘s happy house last year, and i recently dug it out – i’ve fond memories of hearing it on danny tenaglia‘s basics mix driving down freeways in california in june 2002, so i was keen to fit it into a mix myself – but there’s no way i can compete with this! at least i know this mix will remind everyone what a great track it is, and hopefully it’ll bring some much deserved exposure to joe and will ask? across the pond.
