it’s been a minute since solid bump have hit us with a new release, and this one has been in the pipeline for so long that some of us have been, quite literally, itching to get our hands on it. what do you get when you combine san fransisco, leeds and a love of delicious house music?
yeeeeeeeeeeeeah. lovely isn’t it? classic house, tinged with disco, guitar licks that scream party but have a hint of melancholy, ghosts of venice‘s her is, in two words, all good. Continue reading
i first hear mesopotamia in the middle of my favourite section of diplo‘s top ranking mix for santigold. it was pretty much my favourite jam that summer, and on into fall. i mean autumn, of course, yes. fast forward two years, and those occasional purveyors of more-than half-decent house, white girl lust, have tackled the original and beefed it up for late-night action. originally intended as a super-secret djs-only promo, now they’ve released it to the world, but with a 1,000-download limit.
just recently the guys did an interview and mix for the chemical jump blog, the mix of course featuring this b52s bootleg. what they did was, in their own words, “strip the original composition to it’s essence and reconstruct the track as a stomping dub for the dancefloor. The result is too reserved to be called ‘big room’ but far too massive to be a categorized a ‘beard stroker’ edit. Let’s split the difference and call it ‘Mid-Sized House’.”
i can live with that.
i did a weekly chart here for a while, but some time around september i guess it fell by the wayside. then i started to do one for resident advisor (the most recent one is here). but then when i get to thinking what i want to chart, it’s just all a bit….. raaaanghya. yeah, that is an official term for frustration and laziness.
then i wake up to this. white girl lust are getting in on this ra chart business, and they go one better by putting together a mix of their top 10, so you don’t have to go looking for tracks. at your fingertips. nice. i’m especially excited about their remix of ghosts of venice’s her, forthcoming on solid bump records. in the meantime, this is my latest chart. sorry i ain’t got no mix.

i’ve really been feeling an older sort of sound lately. there’s only so far electro can take you right now, so along with new albums from unkle, lcd soundsystem and holy f*ck, i’ve really been digging this compilation put together by dimitri from paris. it brings together some great disco-before-disco tracks, a load of gorgeous teddy pendergrass (rip) songs, both solo and with harold melvin and the blue notes, and then, on disc two, dimitri goes one better and puts his own stamp on them all. my own personal favourite is his rework of the trammps’ the night the lights went out. see more snippets on his soundclouds, and check out the wicked videos on the album’s site.

along similar lines then, i was delighted to find this boot in my inbox from the good people of solid bump. white girl lust went and put together an edit of prince’s wanna be your lover for sxsw, and now they’ve shared it with the rest of the world. go forth and multiply.
Wanna Be Your Lover (White Girl Lust’s Bump Mix) by White Girl Lust
damn. i’m literally about to head out the door to play at the good bits, but i’ve been inundated with great new music today. none better than the latest from solid bump. it’s called pleasure and pressure vol 2 and it’s got tracks from the whole roster – mykill, laberge, le principle, meroz and, of course, white girl lust. all the tracks are in that great chunky disco sound they’re known for, each one indicative of that artist’s personality. laberge rocking the chipmunk sound, wgl with chopped up horns and sexy female vocals, le principle using some lovely filtered guitar licks, while mykill throws in 70s strings, percussion and vocals, and meroz closes proceedings with a dark and mumbly drone that’s almost like a moodier version of music sounds better with you.
as well as all this there is, as usual, some free goodness, with mykill’s flashback available for download from soundcloud. it makes great use of that back to my roots sample, so it’s appropriately named too.
go cop the ep on itunes, beatport or ttl. do it.

can’t really blog too hard this week – very busy – national concert hall tonight, preston tomorrow, working till saturday, vashti bunyan sunday…
but this deserves a special mention. i got love for solid bump, so it’s no surprise that i love this white girl lust remix of laberge‘s funk music. i normally hate the whole 12/8 electro think but this really makes it work. special.
i seem to love everything that’s coming out on solid bump right now, so this mix is looking pretty good to my eyes. white girl lust, whose blood was one of my favourite tracks this summer, has just posted a live mix over on the SB blog. this live mix has a nice balance of brand new stuff from the likes of laberge and eli as well as a few classics from suzy q and depeche mode. there’s even a mini joey negro re-edit section – not mad at all. check it out here.
Last week I stopped by Triple Crown to drop a DJ set at the new night Studio SF hosted by LOW SF & Go Bang. It was a awesome party. People got their soul clap on during “Chicago”, sang along to “aNYway”, and served up shots to the DJ. What more do you want?

wow. five and a half MILLION blog posts on wordpress last month. only 40 of which were mine. kinda puts things in perspective.
for once i’m really excited about some new music right now. white girl lust‘s new ep is pretty great, particularly blood, which is currently available as part of a free sampler on the solid bump blog. for now anyway. you can also check out the crazy video for back and forth from the same ep. go cop it.
