i’m actually going to be in edinburgh this weekend but if i were in dublin i would definitely be going to transmission to see the subs. check out this interview i did with them for the tm blog.
keeping in the spirit of things, the latest ra podcast is crazy good, as is this retro-italo-themed release i blogged about for truants.
a couple of years ago i discovered a track called fulci’s rotting children (possibly on the hllrbrd), and now i want the rest of this compilation. techno frights.
on sunday night when i get home i plan on ordering pizza and watching hammer films.
with the exception of some end-of-night madness, last night went pretty well. i was pretty happy with my set. big big tunes, some stuff i’ve been dying to play for ages and some old favourites. some serious “reach for the lasers” moments in there. i was especially happy with my mixing, it’s normally the least best part of my djing. farewell quigo too. ❤

a sad day has come. our friend and hero quigo is leaving us for the sunnier climes of new zealand. but we have him for one more night at transmission, and that is tonight. so come down and see dublin’s most fun dj for the last time.
this year anyway!
it’s been a good week for arveene and misk. they’ve just been announced for electric picnic, they tore transmission a new one last night, and on top of this they’ve put out their new single eavesdropper on bang gang 12 inches (link is definitely nsfw, so you know). the track is a pounding slab of electro, heaving and pulsating with angry synths and unexpected chord progressions. it’s a pretty hefty piece of work, and i imagine i’m going to hear a lot of it over festival season. there are also some perfect-fit-for-different parties-remixes from cassette jam (which goes even harder) and audiofun (which makes it a techy affair, without losing any of the original’s crunch). you can buy them all here or here, and there’s also a powerfully subtle remix of hystereo for free down below.

i’ve been busy with music new and old lately, and i’ve put a few mixes together. the most recent was for sidetracked, that ever-so-groovy friday night dealio in the chocolate bar in dublin. it’s a game of two halves, as i start off with some more groovy stuff like holmes price‘s unbelievably good cover of the juan maclean‘s human disaster and the classic shep pettibone remix of new order’s true faith. then it goes a bit garagey, with some mj cole and todd edwards, before a deep and slightly irreverent finale thanks to carl craig, and his relentless desire for chicken noodle soup. i’ll be playing sidetracked from 2 next friday, so come along and wave/say hi/boogie.

i don’t know what happened there. is it tuesday already? and june? wow. well my excuse is that i had a busy weekend and stuff. you know, the combination of clubbing, planning a wedding, day-to-day domesticity and plain old work can be pretty time consuming. not that i’m complaining – life is good and the weather is warm. so this, which landed in the past 24 hours, is perfect. it’s another great addition to the white light series, from villa. it’s full of soul, and i’m talking about that painful, makes you cry kind of soul. the sort you want to listen to when it’s so hot you don’t want to move, and just want to sit in the shade and reflect.
“The White Light mixes are, ultimately, about two things: music and space.” Thats what the website tells me. In that case white might be the color of music, because going through my record music collection – everything seems to go about music and space. At first i had a playlist of over 4 hours of music, I started over again, inspired by the second theme. “White Light will always be about night driving” I read. So i made three categories: Landscape Driving, Autobahn Driving & City Driving. Upload your ipod, take your car and join us on this ride.

it’s great when artists you like give away stuff for free. one such artist is a-trak. a few years ago he impressed us all with dirty south dance, that peculiar combination of electro and rap, and now he’s done it again with dirty south dance 2. i’m not quite sure how impressed i am second time round, but it’s definitely worth a listen, and will most likely bring a smile to your face at least once. hearing diddy rapping again is also a trip! just bear one thing in mind: “if you choose to download the audio in Ogg Vorbis format you’re a weirdo”.
another great act, haido/transmission favourite shadow dancer, has put together a couple of exclusive mixes of late. one was for the aforementioned transmission blog, and the latest is to herald the southwest four weekend in this coming august. you have to register to the sw4 site to get the mix, but that’s certainly a trial worth enduring. i mean, check out this tracklist! oh and if you haven’t already, check out the lads’ sound and mixclouds, one full of demos and the other full of mixes new and old. a veritable treasure trove.

i should have written this a week ago, funny how time just jumps up on you and laughs in the face of your so-called plans. anyway, i’m really loving this new track from dominique young unique. i talked about her a bit last year, but she’s back again with some more intensely fun tracks. one is show my ass, a high-tempo, energetic number which manages to incorporate a million ideas into less than three minutes. nutso. then we have war talk, which is either of two things – a self-aggrandising battle cry or a smooth disco jam. “feel this glock” she cries, over some damn funky beats. i love it. indeed, i put it on the latest transmission radio show – plug! plug! on top of all this, i just noticed she’s playing pukkelpop, which is pretty awesome. i haven’t been in two years and i’m really excited about this year. this is icing.
anyway check out both tracks, and for the deejays out there, we’ve got the vocals of each track for your pleasure. make something nice happen dudes.

as i mentioned earlier, i played true stories last night. it was pretty quiet – you know, day after a bank holiday, exam season – but i’m not mad. if you got mad at people not coming to your gigs you’d be me mad at a lot of people all the time.
so anyway this is what i played. it’s a bit greatest hits, but hey. i tried to keep it varied. that chris wade track is so good.

after love me like this orlando and i went back to back, i can’t really remember what he played, definitely some moombathon, i also played plastikman’s konception, the ayres remix of wale’s roof, and i finished with don’t scandalize mine by sugar bear, which has so many gorgeous elements of perfection – think break, talking heads sample, rakim sample…
maybe i’ll play it again this saturday at transmission.
i’m tired of giving apologieeees. really doe. mad busy. work is getting pretty interesting which is cool. but life is happening. i’ve got a rake of sets coming up, mainly transmission and sidetracked, but i’m also playing orlando’s true stories night next week. i’ve just put together a short hip-hop mix for him, pending his approval it should be available for general consumption in the coming days. alas i must take a step back from blurging over the next few days. please forgive me. i’ll be back by the weekend with new tunes and some dj-friendly tools and tracks. peace out.
