damn. i’m literally about to head out the door to play at the good bits, but i’ve been inundated with great new music today. none better than the latest from solid bump. it’s called pleasure and pressure vol 2 and it’s got tracks from the whole roster – mykill, laberge, le principle, meroz and, of course, white girl lust. all the tracks are in that great chunky disco sound they’re known for, each one indicative of that artist’s personality. laberge rocking the chipmunk sound, wgl with chopped up horns and sexy female vocals, le principle using some lovely filtered guitar licks, while mykill throws in 70s strings, percussion and vocals, and meroz closes proceedings with a dark and mumbly drone that’s almost like a moodier version of music sounds better with you.
as well as all this there is, as usual, some free goodness, with mykill’s flashback available for download from soundcloud. it makes great use of that back to my roots sample, so it’s appropriately named too.
go cop the ep on itunes, beatport or ttl. do it.
Mykill – Flashback (Free Download for Pleasure & Pressure Vol.2) by Solid Bump Records
i’ve been away for a bit – but my excuse is that i’ve just moved house and i’ve no internet yet. PAINFUL. i popped back home yesterday and picked up a few things of interest.
first off, my new favourite label has just thrown something out there for the seeds. solid bump’s first output of the year is a track called passion from meroz, who you may recall had a remix on laberge‘s this feeling ep. it’s a great filtered house effort that’s fast and chunky enough to fit in those late night sets. they’ve also got a great interview with some of his influences on the label’s blog.
Meroz – Passion
another recent favourite, riva starr, was the contributor on bbc’s essential mix last weekend, and, being the dude that he is, riva put the mix up on soundcloud. what a legend. check it here.
finally, the ever-delightful white light mix series was extended with a great mix from your boy brian. as usual, it’s a deramy trip to disco heaven.
White Light 19 – Your Boy Brian
This mix was a pleasant departure from all the commercial gigs i’ve been taking on lately. It’s sorta paced like a movie / square rpg; little peaks and valleys, a few bittersweet melodies, a cathartic finish and then the credits roll. It’s also makes for decent listening while you’re doing crossword puzzles.
The xx – Intro (extended edit)
Masanori Ikeda – City Lights
Pet Shop Boys – Love Comes Quickly
The Rah Band – Message From The Stars
Bwh – Stop
Pacific! – Villanova Sunset

DJ DLG – Memories
Marchand – Starlove
Capsule – I’m Feeling You
Zoot Woman – Information First

Mille – Stargazers
Ronald Jenkees – Outer Space
can’t really blog too hard this week – very busy – national concert hall tonight, preston tomorrow, working till saturday, vashti bunyan sunday…
but this deserves a special mention. i got love for solid bump, so it’s no surprise that i love this white girl lust remix of laberge‘s funk music. i normally hate the whole 12/8 electro think but this really makes it work. special.
since i’ve been so busy on this mix thing i’ve not been giving due attention to new music. my bad. in the past few days i’ve been sent some great stuff, and it’s high time i share it with the world.
i’ve been repping for solid bump for a while, so it stands to reason that i should be excited about laberg’s debut release on the label. i had no idea, but laberge is just 22. i hate it when i hear that someone that i really respect is younger than me. anyway the true love ep, available on beatport, comes with three original tracks and a remix. the title track has a low-slung bassline, soft synths and a chipmunk vocal sample that really works. just don’t let go is a more laidback affair, beautiful stuff for a warm up. we don’t know has emotive chord changes reminiscent reminiscent of tee’s happy, and the remix of true love, by meroz, gives the original more oomph to take things into the early hours. all in all it’s one solid release for a label that is solid by name…. well you get me. check out this remix of just don’t let go by dj eq. like meroz’s remix, it beefs up the beautiful original and makes it a little bit more late-night friendly.
Just Don’t Let Go (DJ EQ Remix) – Laberge
chaos dans le cbd consists of two brothers from auckland, and they’re making some damn fine tunes. think brodinski, momma’s boy, renaissance man. my favourite track of theirs is called tesh & maccas – don’t ask me what that means. it’s got high pitched bleeps that seem to be singing something to me, white noise and that hint of tribalism that suggests something more than a little bit wild. rag rats is a little bit angrier, and the wild is more than just suggested. rattling tribal fills and more of those bleeps help this one become something of a banger within this genre – if that’s possible. and, appropriately enough, they’ve remixed noob and brodinski’s peanuts club. while the original is something of a dj tool, they’ve taken the signature riff and built a hazy, smokey new track around it. thumbs up.

Chaos Dans Le CBD – Rag Rats (Original Mix)
Noob & Brodinski – Peanuts Club (Chaos Dans Le CBD Remix)
i seem to love everything that’s coming out on solid bump right now, so this mix is looking pretty good to my eyes. white girl lust, whose blood was one of my favourite tracks this summer, has just posted a live mix over on the SB blog. this live mix has a nice balance of brand new stuff from the likes of laberge and eli as well as a few classics from suzy q and depeche mode. there’s even a mini joey negro re-edit section – not mad at all. check it out here.
Last week I stopped by Triple Crown to drop a DJ set at the new night Studio SF hosted by LOW SF & Go Bang. It was a awesome party. People got their soul clap on during “Chicago”, sang along to “aNYway”, and served up shots to the DJ. What more do you want?

i wrote about this bobby analog guy a few months ago, when a mix of his was played on bbc northern ireland. his tracks have also featured in a few of my top 10s – so you know he’s good. his latest work is an hour of late 90s-inspired house music – featuring people like czr, le knight club, buffalo bunch and bob sinclair – as well as the best of the recent crop of producers in that vein, like laberge, hervé‘s voodoo chilli alias and, of course, bobby himself. enjoy.
