bank holiday fun

bank holiday weekends in dublin are always crazy busy when it comes to gigs. this upcoming october bank holiday (sunday 24) is no different, with a rake of big names flocking to different venues across the city on the sunday night. which one you choose will depend as much on a combination of who you’re going with and where it is (and consequently how much it is) as who is playing.

for example, much as i’d love to see laidback luke (he was a lot of fun at pukkelpop this year), i’d be more inclined to walk 10 minutes to the twisted pepper to see moodymann and optimo. ultimately, it doesn’t matter what i would do, as i’ll be staying in and getting some sleep ahead of my 9am start the next morning… hurrah. that said, i’m pretty excited about seeing trentemøller live again, his set at (again) pukkelpop in 2007 was one of the best i’ve ever seen, and a saturday night show in tripod should be just dandy.

return of the blurg

i haven’t blogged in, like, a week, which is a crazy long time. my excuse is that this time last week i was in a field in belgium, and i deigned not to bring my iphone with me. i didn’t even tweet for five whole days, which must be some kind of record. while i was there i saw some crap shows, some ok shows, some good shows and some great shows. i won’t call out the crap or ok people. there’s a full sort of rundown here, but i’ll just tell you what i loved.

plastikman – rolling thunderous acid techno bleep apocalypse
renaissance man – djs who were thoroughly entertaining didn’t just play what every other dj played (ie no pon de floor, no afrojack, no swedish house mafia)
flying lotus – this was a weird one. he sort of laced through a bizarre set of hip-hop/rock/glitch/dubstep, moving from nas is like to idioteque in the space of about eight minutes. beyond that, he seemed to be having more fun playing tracks off his laptop than most ones-and-twos djs i’ve ever seen.

sunday afternoon…

is for cleaning the place up. but there’s football on! it’s come to my attention that pretty much everyone on the dublin dj scene is completely disinterested in sport. bar colin perkins of course. i recently bought this tee and wore it out when djing on night. hardly a word was said about it. oh well.

last night at transmission was a lot of fun. jon averill was playing jungle brothers and rory phillips remixes, while girls in the crowd were asking to hear bedrock. imagine the looks on their faces if i had played this… some day. i was pretty happy with my set. lot of key-mixing. off the cuff yo. i dug out killing puritans last week to possibly play on full moon on tuesday, but i ended up playing koochy last night. wonder if anyone remembers that one.

Tiga – Sex O’Clock (Matias Aguayo Remix)
Out Hud – Put It Away, Put It Away, Put It Away, Dad
Gorillaz – Stylo (Alex Metrix Remix)
Major Lazer – Bruk Out (Foamo Remix)
L-Vis 1990 – United Groove (Kingdom Remix)
Erol Alkan & Boys Noize – Lemonade
Armand Van Helden – Koochy
Schizofonics – 88
Zinc – Blunt Edge
Yeasayer – O.n.e. (XXXchange Remix)
Zombie Nation – Mystery Meat Affair (Shadow Dancer Remix)
Le Le – Breakfast
Housemeister – What You Want (Siriusmo Remix)
Jan Driver – Tellyfoam
Rob 3 – The Chase
Bag Raiders – Fun Punch (Jokers Of The Scene Remix)
Twizzle – Skydiving (Greenmoney Remix)
Delphic – Halcyon (L-Vis 1990 Dub)
Wiley – Never Be Your Woman (Jaymo & Andy George ‘Moda’ Remix)

let’s hope it’s a good one

so my first new year’s eve spent anywhere other than someone’s house or a starbucks (long story) was pretty crazy. schizofonics rocked a transmission crowd through the midnight shift, and myself and jon averill kept things going before hystereo and shit disco brought the proceedings to a close. the insane sight that was dublin’s streets almost entirely bereft of taxis was compounded by the ice-rink-like quality of the city’s pavements – drunken revellers were lucky not to fall over as they warily made their way home. i myself had to grab on to lamp posts and even a bridge at points in order to escape the cruel hand of gravity. town tonight was like some sort of post-apocalyptic nightmare, as city-dwellers and the unlucky few who found themsleves working tonight shuffled gingerly across roads like cold-stricken zombies.

if i didn’t have to do it myself it’d be hilarious.

anyway – this is kind of pretty much what i played last night – jon also played (at the very least) some old school rave, a-trak’s heads will roll remix and star guitar somewhere in between all of this. want to do more b2b sets now!

Simian Mobile Disco – Hustler
Spank Rock – Bump (Switch Remix)
Erol Alkan & Boys Noize – Death Suite (DJ Mehdi Simple Acid Edit)
Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies)
Boys Noize – Oh! (A-Trak Remix)
Surkin – White Knight Two
The Rapture – House of Jealous Lovers
Daft Punk – Crescendolls
Fake Blood – Fix Your Accent
Tiga – Hot In Herre
Empire of The Sun – Walking On A Dream (Treasure Fingers Remix)

(jack) beats staying in

wowsers. last night was pretty insane. probably the biggest crowd i’ve ever seen at transmission. jack beats absolutely wrecked things. so so good. i arrived to find i was coming on after the little-known jon averill – so no pressure there!

i kinda tried to keep things pretty upbeat, but without going too hard into either obscurity or heavy bangers. think i did ok – special shouts go to schizofonics and chaos dans le cbd – both of their tracks went off.

also – jan driver‘s rat alert as football style singalong – who knew?!

Boy 8-Bit – Baltic Pine
Alan Braxe & Fred Falke – Intro
Lykke Li – I’m Good. I’m Gone (Fred Falke Remix)
Chromeo – Needy Girl (Lifelike Remix)
MGMT – Of Moons, Birds And Monsters (Holy Ghost! Remix)
White Girl Lust – Blood
Jan Driver – Rat Alert
Major Lazer – Keep It Going Louder (Tom Stevens Remix)
Dances With White Girls – Everyone’s Got To Make A Living
Fully Fitted – 50 Ways
Armand van Helden – Playmate (ft Lacole ‘Tigga’ Campbell & Roxy Cottontail)
Schizofonics – 88
Chaos Dans Le CBD Feat. Tommie Pickles – Tesh & Maccas (Original Mix)
The Chemical Brothers – Star Guitar (Pete Heller’s Expanded Mix)
Myd – Train to Bamako

i’m back

i’ve been completely slacking on my blog this week, but hey i took some time off after exams and then had to pack up a year of my life and get the flock out of preston. so i have to re-up on my innanet game, forgive me. i just got this banging joe and will ask? remix of milke, it’s a huge summery synthy monster that will probably go down a treat at festivals across europe this summer. check it out here. i know i said i’d have the interview i did with these guys up a while back but everything seems to have gotten in the way – tomorrow! for definite.

there are so many good gigs coming up in dublin, it’s insane – probably not a good time for me to come back if i want to be in any way productive, but oh well. it’s looking like this (and i can’t even make all of these):

june 5 – shadow dancer (live), kennedy’s
june 5 – kormac and dj yoda @ mud, the twisted pepper
june 5 – style of eye, think tank
june 6 – jokers of the scene @ transmission, the button factory
june 6 – jesse rose @ pogo, the twisted pepper
june 12 – dj falcon @ drop, wax/spy
june 13 – optimo & shock all day party @ toejam, the bernard shaw (free!)
june 13 – joe and will ask? @ transmission, the button factory
june 13 – optimo @ pogo, the twisted pepper
june 20 – âme @ pogo, the twisted pepper
june 27 – xxxchange @ transmission, the button factory

i just can’t deal with all of this. i guess it all comes down to who will give me guestlist 😉 also major props to shock aka jon averill who has a major hand in many of the above gigs. what a dude.

ps go out and vote tomorrow!
