sidetracked bank holiday EXTRAVAGANZA

yupp, i used the e word. it’s a big deal. sidetracked has been running things between 8 and 11 on a friday since the beginning of the year, nicely leading into trainwreck, but tonight it’s sidetracked all night long. jamie clarke, frank sweeney, colin perkins, jevan neilan, quigo, kevin aiken, sophie de vere, jeff courtney flynn, shane morrisey, sarah mckenna, james o’donohue, just daire and myself. expect some of this.

Aurra – Baby Love (VDRK Special Disco Edit) by VDRK

sidetracked last night was, as ever, a lot of fun. i had a friend who’s not into djing join me in the booth, so i got to explain what i do and how things work and so on. things really got interesting when frank sweeney showed up with serato. frank followed my pop-disco set with a killer slow hip-hop set – some dilla, some flylo, a couple of awesome b.cause edits, it was a joy to watch. if i can be half that good at true stories in a few weeks i’ll be doing well!

after sidetracked i headed down to see ewan pearson at nightflight. as fellow dj jevan described it, ewan started a bit housey, then got techy and glitchy, and finished up with what i’ll call a lot of “reach for the lasers” tunes. you know it’s a good set when you don’t know anything but you still love it – and then towards the end he whipped out this monster…

Mykill – Love Story
Crazy P – Bumcop
Tensnake – Coma Cat
Hot Chip – I Feel Better (Den Haan Remix)
Róisín Murphy – Overpowered
LCD Soundsystem – Too Much Love
Tiga – (Far From) Home
The xx – Shelter (Them Jeans ‘Drum’ Edit)
Talking Heads – Girlfriend Is Better (Bit Funk Edit)
Seelenluft – Manila (Ewan Pearson Remix)
Azari & III – Reckless (With Your Love)
Canyons – Fire Eyes
Eli Escobar – If You Need A Friend
In Flagranti – Brash and Vulgar
Sneaker Pimps – Post Modern Sleaze (Salt City Orchestra Nightclub Mix)

zomby nation

where were you in 92? i was in school, on holiday in france, yeah whatever. if you’ve ever read a blog in your life you’ve probably heard of zomby, and his cut-up jungle/ghetto/bmore/dubstep/unclassifiable album/mixtape with a title inspired by a line from m.i.a.’s xr2. have you heard that he’s playing in dublin? mag-turned-website-turned-radio-show-turned-promoter analogue is bringing him over to dublin this weekend, and it promises to be an interesting event.

playing the twisted pepper, where i’ve recently seen fake blood, dj funk and the ridiculously good residents such as barry redsetta, shortie and frank sweeney, he will hopefully indulge the whims of the sell-out crowd (the buzz surrounding this gig is palpable) with some choice gems from wwui92 and his various eps from the last two years, while blowing everyone away with intriguing and innovative experimental pieces like sky high, which appeared unceremoniously on his twitter this past week. but then again, if he did what we expected it wouldn’t be very interesting, would it? imagine he just showed up and played 75 minutes of think breaks and sci-fi samples. it’d still be epic. see you there.

in the meantime, read the masked man’s interview in the fader for an insight into the twisted mind of this enigmatic character.

leaders of the new school

next wednesday is st patrick’s day, the national holiday, so most people have it off work! so let’s party! yup. i don’t have it off, but that won’t stop me. i’ve become an expert at burning the candle at each and every available end. there will be loads of parties going on across dublin, but i shall be at this one. spread across three rooms in the (relatively) newly re-opened the good bits, at leaders of the new school you will be given the chance to see some of dublin’s best up-and-coming and established djs. i won’t list them all, but you’ve got people from shortie and frank from mr jones, myself and salacious from transmission, producers like detboi and lorcan mak, and up-and-comers like niall d’arcy (trashed) and i have turtles. of course it’s all being put together by good bits don arveene. the event page is here. i’m on at 9.30. come on. it’ll be fun.

bia for the soul

ended up somehow djing for a brief period in bia bar last night. good fun. most of the crowd were djs – you know how it is – so imagine my shame when one of my cds started skipping… i’d even spent half an hour getting from 128 down to 124, and sure enough the first track i find and throw in is 130… fml… anyway. i was pretty happy i got to play security – it’s been kicking around on a cd for a few months now so it’s about time i’ve played it!

empire of the sun – walking on a dream (treasure fingers remix)
uffie – mcs can kiss (zombie disco squad remix)
the beat club – security
tiga – pleasure from the bass (joakim remix)
eli escobar – glass house
cut copy – future (chromeo remix)
fully fitted – 50 ways

after this i went over to the twisted pepper for switch – alas, due to disastrous weather conditions he wasn’t able to make it over. nonetheless, mr jones residents shortie and frank sweeney rocked the place – the crowd was insanely up for it and the lads did not disappoint. boom.

now it’s back to work and the real world for me…
