bank holiday fun

bank holiday weekends in dublin are always crazy busy when it comes to gigs. this upcoming october bank holiday (sunday 24) is no different, with a rake of big names flocking to different venues across the city on the sunday night. which one you choose will depend as much on a combination of who you’re going with and where it is (and consequently how much it is) as who is playing.

for example, much as i’d love to see laidback luke (he was a lot of fun at pukkelpop this year), i’d be more inclined to walk 10 minutes to the twisted pepper to see moodymann and optimo. ultimately, it doesn’t matter what i would do, as i’ll be staying in and getting some sleep ahead of my 9am start the next morning… hurrah. that said, i’m pretty excited about seeing trentemøller live again, his set at (again) pukkelpop in 2007 was one of the best i’ve ever seen, and a saturday night show in tripod should be just dandy.

so everyone’s going to oxegen. and why wouldn’t they? it’s one of the best festivals in europe isn’t it? sorry, europe’s greatest music festival. according to its own website. and websites don’t lie, do they? to be fair, it is a pretty stellar lineup. as far as popular music goes, it can’t really be beat. and it’s even got some serious outsider cred going on, booking the likes of jackmaster, popof, louis la roche and villa. there’s just something sterile about it all. i duno. i don’t want to go on a rant here… i could, but i won’t. i’ll be at home this weekend – working till midnight tomorrow, checking out a wedding band on saturday and working again on sunday. i’ll have an eye on the world cup final but to be honest i’m not mad on either team. so instead i’ll be buried on headlines.

dj sector go-slow

last night i played sidetracked for the first time in a few weeks. i always enjoy those sets as it gives me the chance to play sloooowwwweeer. i started off at 124 and ended up down at 114. mmmmmm. daire jumped in and played this ridiculous(ly good) edit of thriller, but he’s my boss there so who am i to say no.

Junior Boys – Hazel (Ewan Pearson’s Extended Disco Edit)
Walter Jones – Living Without Your Love
Lindstrøm – Grand Ideas (Prins Thomas Radio Edit)
Caribou – Odessa
Lenka – Trouble Is A Friend (Eli Escobar Remix)
Michael Jackson – Thriller (OOFT Phazed Edit)
LCD Soundsystem – 45:33 (Prince Language Remix)
Bent – Swollen (Mighty Mouse Remix)
Azari & III – Hungry for the Power
Veronica’s Veil (Erol Alkan’s Extended Rework)
45 King vs Wale – Roof (DJ Ayres Remix)
The xx – VCR (Matthew Dear Remix)
Woolfy – Absynth (Marcus Worgull Remix)
Holy Ghost! – Hold On

after sidetracked i went to the good bits to see boy 8-bit. it’s always funny watching this long-haired dude in a death metal tee rock out to dance music. but when you think that guy is the man behind such impeccable productions as baltic pine and that remix of florence and the machine, it makes a lot more sense. he even dropped joe and will ask?‘s the rusty pig, which is gas as i’d always thought it shared stylistic tendencies with the boy’s remix of mars. there were a lot more people present than at his show at the twisted pepper last year, which is great, but he really deserves much more attention and credit for his top-notch tracks and perfect djing. boy 8-bit, i salute you.

still recovering

well transmission on saturday was nuts. even though it was just us residents, the place was packed. like at krash, i tried to play as many tracks as possible that i hadn’t played before – though mr blood made an appearance yet again – it’s just too good of a tune to let go! seriously though, as a clubber i know i get bored hearing more than a few tracks over and over, so i guess as a dj it’s my job to keep it interesting…

Young MC – Bust A Move (Diplo Remix)
Riton – Oh Super!
Joe and Will Ask? – Christ Martin
Green Velvet – La La Land
White Girl Lust – Blood
Delphic – Doubt (Paul Woolford Remix)
Douster – For Weirdos Only (Momma’s Boy Remix)
Zinc – Blunt Edge
Ian Pooley – Chord Memory (Daft Punk Remix)
Gossip – Love Long Distance (Riva Starr Remix)
The Count & Sinden – Beeper (Fake Blood Remix)[snippets!]
The Count & Sinden – Beeper (A-Trak Remix)
Myd – Noria
Tittsworth – WTF (Eli Escobar Remix)
Fake Blood – Fix Your Accent
Djedjotronic – Dirty And Hard
Shadow Dancer – Poke
Röyksopp – This Must Be It (Rex The Dog K-DART Remix)
Major Lazer – When You Hear The Bassline (Dance Area Remix)
ZZT – The Worm (Original Munich Version)

quigo and myself going back to back was a lot of fun too – not entirely certain of everything he played but it was something like this…

Major Lazer – Keep It Going Louder (Diplo Remix)
Gramaphonedzie – Why Don’t You (Greenmoney Remix)
Felix Da Housecat – Kickdrum (Arveene & Misk Remix)
MSTRKRFT – Work On You
Dead Prez – Hip-Hop (Diplo Remix)
Juice String – Sex Weed (Laidback Luke Remix)
Jokers of The Scene – Baggy Bottom Boys
10CC – I’m Not In Love

unfortunately we had to cut the last track short. think we even finished before the lights went on! crazy times. definitely want to do more back to back sets – really poses a challenge i think, and gives you a chance to have fun trying to get inside someone’s head.

what i’m really excited about is this: interview coming soon!

early top 10

i fear some of these charts may be getting a bit repetitive – but hey, i’m just repping what i love you know. glass house is slowly working its way up my tunes of the year list, may well be at the top by december. as for that hell track – yeah there’s been some controversy, but the remix package is to die for. radioslave wins for the sheer balls of making a motherf*ckin’ 28 minute version for the two motherf*ckers that understand it. i’m one of them 😉

1 Eli Escobar – Glass House
2 Kid Sister – Right Hand Hi (Kingdom Remix)
3 Erol Alkan & Boys Noize – Death Suite (DJ Mehdi Simple Acid Edit)
4 Jokers of the Scene – Baggy Bottom Boys (Original Mix)
5 The Count & Sinden – Mega (Schizofonics Remix)
6 Hugg & Pepp – Sweet Rosie (Turbo Edit)
7 Hell ft. P. Diddy – The DJ (Radio Slave Remix)
8 Jay-Z Feat. Rihanna – Run This Town (Fake Blood 1 Minute Mash)
9 Yazoo – Situation (US 12” Mix)
10 Model 500 – Night Drive (Time, Space, Transmat)

what’s my name?!

fake blood, fake blood. i guess he needs to introduction, and he’s been blogged to death, but hey i’m going to talk about him anyway. you know he does that thing in his remixes where he cuts up the original track to make it sound like the artist is saying fake blood? at the field day afterparty i heard him play a track which had a fake blood drop that sounded like it was created just out of noise. no vocals. no idea what it was though. for now, these are my favourites. you could say the calvin harris drop is a bit lazy, making use as it does of harris saying “blood” – but he’d be a fool to do it any other way!

field day mix

so ahead of field day i was going to do a rundown of the acts i’m excited about seeing, but instead i threw a mix together with some of these acts. it’s far from exhaustive – i can’t say i’m familiar with every act on the lineup – but it features a breadth of styles and is hopefully somewhat representative of what’s on offer. there are a couple of drastic shifts in mood, which all (hopefully) make sense from a tonal point of view, but also capture the feeling of leaving one act and seeing another completely different performance on a different stage. or not 😉 either way, i hope you enjoy.

haido – Field Day 2009

Juana Molina – Micael
Santigold – L.E.S. Artistes (XXXChange Remix)
Little Boots – Stuck On Repeat (Album Version)
Sébastien Tellier – Kilometer (Aeroplane ‘Italo 84’ Remix)
Seth Troxler – Hurt (feat. Matthew Dear)
Audion – Just A Man
The Juan MacLean – Happy House (Matthew Dear vs Audion Remix)
Mystery Jets – Two Doors Down
Calvin Harris – Ready For The Weekend (Fake Blood Remix)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero (Erol Alkan Rework)
Fever Ray – Triangle Walks (Allez Allez Remix)
The Horrors – Scarlet Fields
Delphic – Counterpoint (Delphic’s En Route Mix)
Dance Area – AA247 (Skull Juice Remix 2)
Skream – One For The Heads Who Remember
The Big Pink – Velvet
Final Fantasy – This Is The Dream Of Win & Regine

these things really come in cycles… at the moment some dudes on the erol alkan forum are cooking up remixes of darude‘s sandstorm. i’m not quite sure why… i just got an email from bullet train records, and one of their new tracks is a cover of tina moore‘s never gonna let you go… a vocal sample of that was taken and looped and relooped ad nauseam for double 99‘s rip groove, which i remember coming ahead of wiseguysooh la la on some ibiza compilation a decade ago… the wiseguys was a front for one theo keating, now runnin’ tings as fake blood. back in march erol cheekily led me astray in march when he suggested that a fake blood remix was making big noise in miami – a remix of darude’s sandstorm… ok this is all quite tenuous but whatever. i always wondered why they blurred out the gun in this video…

A-Trak - Infinity +1

listened to trizzy‘s infinity +1 today. well it’s better than his fabriclive anyway. some of it is ok, some of it isn’t great, but there’s a section in the middle that’s really special. the following section encapsulates everything i love about mixing tracks together…

7. Kid Sister “Life On TV”
8. Sébastien Tellier “Kilometer” (A-Trak Remix)
9. The Golden Filter “Solid Gold”
10. Bag Raiders “Nil By Mouth” (Knightlife Remix)
11. Holy Ghost! “Hold On”
12. DJ Mehdi “Pocket Piano” (Joakim Remix)

maybe it’s just me, but i love it when two tracks sit so well together, in key, and one just seems to grow organically from the other. whenever i put mixes together this is exactly what i try to do – i’m even working on a mix right now where if this doesn’t happen, i’m scrapping the tracks. seriously. so since the above six tracks sound so perfect together, i’m a little disappointed the rest of the mix isn’t up to that standard. particularly disappointing is the mix from siriusmo‘s housemeister remix into stuck on repeat. but i guess you can’t have it all, and if this is at all representative of a club situation there are bound to be some fluffed moments.
