sidetracked bank holiday EXTRAVAGANZA

yupp, i used the e word. it’s a big deal. sidetracked has been running things between 8 and 11 on a friday since the beginning of the year, nicely leading into trainwreck, but tonight it’s sidetracked all night long. jamie clarke, frank sweeney, colin perkins, jevan neilan, quigo, kevin aiken, sophie de vere, jeff courtney flynn, shane morrisey, sarah mckenna, james o’donohue, just daire and myself. expect some of this.

Aurra – Baby Love (VDRK Special Disco Edit) by VDRK

sunday afternoon…

is for cleaning the place up. but there’s football on! it’s come to my attention that pretty much everyone on the dublin dj scene is completely disinterested in sport. bar colin perkins of course. i recently bought this tee and wore it out when djing on night. hardly a word was said about it. oh well.

last night at transmission was a lot of fun. jon averill was playing jungle brothers and rory phillips remixes, while girls in the crowd were asking to hear bedrock. imagine the looks on their faces if i had played this… some day. i was pretty happy with my set. lot of key-mixing. off the cuff yo. i dug out killing puritans last week to possibly play on full moon on tuesday, but i ended up playing koochy last night. wonder if anyone remembers that one.

days off

…invariably end up being spent half in bed and half on the computer, especially when there are a million things to do. last night i played at krash again, though it wasn’t the best night, so i won’t go into it. though i will say that going back to back for a whole set was fun.

tonight i’m playing at sidetracked, which i’m really looking forward to, and after that i’m thinking about heading in to tripod to see sharam. i know he won’t exactly feature on most people’s lists of must-sees right now – although you should bear in mind that his essential mix was voted the best of last year. more importantly, he is (or was i guess) half of deep dish. i think they first really attracted my attention when muzik magazine (rip) carried an interview with them in june 2001 and put the following quote on the cover: “hard house is shit.”

somehow i managed never to see them at their peak, or even slightly after their peak, but these two guys were quite a big presence in my mid-teen obsession with prog house. last night i played hideaway out for the first time to an empty floor, and, hey, two people came along and starting break-dancing and whatnot. so even though it’s not going to be the life-defining set it would have been say, nine years ago, it’s still something i’m keen on experiencing.

i won’t hear any of this tonight, but i might play it at sidetracked.

krashing the party

last night was my second time playing krash in wax with colin perkins. there was a vibrant and appreciative crowd, so it was a good night to play. i had decided earlier in the day to play a new remix of modjo’s lady, but alas it went down like a proverbial lead balloon. the floor emptied. it was a nice challenge though – i had to build it up again from scratch. i remember years ago reading that apparently in his early days sharam used to get told off by promoters/club owners for being so good that clubbers wouldn’t leave the floor and go to the bar. i don’t think i’m quite at that stage yet 😉 it was nice to play stickin’ and amsterdam for the first time, two awesome tracks that i haven’t had the chance to play yet. both went off.

funnily, when i went to the toilet after my set i could hear colin bringing in da funk – i rushed back and asked “which remix?” “schizofonics” was the reply. boom. 2010 is going to be a schizofonic year – mark my words.

sorry, got sidetracked there

last thursday i did something i’ve never done before – played two gigs in one night. the first was a low-key affair, playing breezy disco at just daire‘s sidetracked night in the newly refurbished chocolate bar. it’s a lovely spot, and it’s a great place to play some funkier stuff. daire played some great disco like still going theme, and the siriusmo remix of shooting star. another first was that myself and quigo went back to back – something we first talked about as far back as june or july 2008. we should hopefully be doing that again some time.

after side tracked it was down to krash in wax, my first time playing downstairs after several spots upstairs in spy. being a three-roomed affair, naturally the crowd ebbed and flowed, but i was pretty happy with how the set went. also props to colin perkins not least for having me down, but also for looping and filtering and all sorts of ish on top of what i was playing.

Bam Bam – Give It To Me (Original 12″ Mix)
Paco de Moor – Morning After
Cevin Fisher – The Freaks Come Out (Idiotproof Remix – Jesse Rose Edit)

better late than never

i hate when this happens – someone uses a track in a mix before you get the chance. what makes it even worse in this case, it’s my own edit! i recently messed around with in flagranti‘s a piece of false morality and had planned on putting it in my next mix, but all of a sudden i got an email from one colin perkins, who’d kicked off his most recent mix with that very track. it’s a half hour romp through some awesome tracks, from ireland and beyond, with newcomers and old heads alike getting airtime. i only realised this afternoon i hadn’t offered up a mix of the weekend, so here’s one to keep you buzzing on this lovely sunday afternoon.

Colin Perkins – 30 Min September Mix

In Flagranti – A Piece Of False Morality (haido’s Extendedit)
Fake Blood – Fix Your Accent
Brodinski & Noob – Peanuts Club
Spencer & Hill – Cool (Afrojack Remix)
Style Of Eye – Road Race
Boys Noize – Jeffer (Para One Remix)
Major Lazer – Pon Di Floor
Arveene & Misk – Hells Bells
D.I.M. & Tai – Lyposuct
Jennifer Delano – Amsterdam (Riptide Remix)
