no rest for the wicked

so i was supposed to have an internet-free weekend, but my kind host has left me in his university’s computer room while he does some photocopying, or something. this afternoon i trawled around london looking for phonica – printing a map might have helped – until i was helped my a kindly policeman on piccadilly circus who just happened to have a map of the capital in his pocket. sweet. so i picked up some random oddities for super cheap in the uber-cool soho record store (which just received those crazy ark 1 tees), and i also grabbed the juan maclean‘s one day vinnil (with added marc romboy/emperor machine/surkin) in hmv of all places.

meanwhile, whoever isn’t at airbound is certainly keeping the bodytonic site ticking over. they’ve just announced the tracklist for chromeo‘s forthcoming dj-kicks mix. i’m stumped – the only track i know is the eagles cover they’ve just released. wow. i’m excited. nice to see young shazam getting a look-in.

it’s a shame

i played sax at a rehearsal tonight for the first time since september – my lips were in bits. i just started thinking, why are there no good sax parts in songs? certainly not in dance music. i can only think of two right now: monie love’s it’s a shame and chromeo‘s 100%. can you think of any more? also check out this awesome remix of charlie mingus’ moanin’ for some serious techno/bari action. it shouldn’t work but it does. i can’t find any info on nick verway but he’s got some good tracks floating around – i used one in a recent mix.

(1.46 – 2.04)

Chromeo – 100%
Charles Mingus – Moanin’ (Nick Verwey Remix)

lather up!

i really love chromeo. needy girl is one of the best songs in recent years, their remixes of feist and treasure fingers are simply wondrous, and watching them in interviews they just come across as the coolest dudes around. then i saw this.

yes, there they are on yo gabba gabba! extolling the virtues of cleanliness, managing to make even washing your hands cool (or sexy, if you’re a girl). i was wandering through myspace today and i found the above track in their player. they call it yo gabba joint, but i’ve renamed it very clean boy. oh yeah.

Chromeo – Very Clean Boy

also shout out to ben white of squeaky bleeps for getting his asher roth remix featured on the mad decent blog. holla!

shellshock!

i was the only dj at soundcheck tonight who didn’t play the original zero… but anyway, i pretty much enjoyed tonight’s set more than any other in recent memory. damn happy. funny that a tune that was almost an afterthought was the best received – loads of people came up to me during needy girl, including one girl who wanted to hear momma’s boy. i deliberately left fancy footwork at home because i knew i’d be playing needy girl… anyway – this is what it looked like.

Franz Ferdinand – No You Girls (Dances With White Girls Remix)
Amanda Blank – Might Like You Better
Young Fathers – Straight Back On It
Kid Sister – Get Fresh (Alex Gopher Remix)
XXXChange – Our Love
Chromeo – Needy Girl (Bloc Party Remix)
Chelley vs Mr Oizo – I Took The Night (DJ Ayres Flatbeat Mix)
Smarttech – Took The Trompeta
Balkan Beat Box – Bulgarian Chicks
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero (Erol Alkan Remix)
Liquid Liquid – Optimo
The Rapture – House of Jealous Lovers
DJ Class – Roll It (Fully Fitted Remix ft Pase Rock)
The Juan MacLean – One Day (Surkin Remix)
Phoenix – If I Ever Feel Better I’ll Go To The Disco (Buffalo Bunch Remix)
Midfield General – Disco Sirens (Boy 8-Bit Remix)
Armand Van Helden – Playmate
DJ Mehdi – Pocket Piano (Joakim Remix)

i also threw on modest mouse’s tiny cities made of ashes at the end of new amusement‘s set (not without encouragement). good night this was. and sarah played yes! quality.

about to start a mix that will represent these tunes. hold on, holy ghost style.

i <3 rcrd lbl

as above. i’m djing at soundcheck on thursday and i’m mulling over what i’m going to play. maybe the bloc party remix of needy girl which i picked up in city discs last week. maybe some liquid liquid.

or else some new mpfrees. like switch’s björk remix. or alex gopher’s kid sis remix (which i meant to play last time, and i only remembered when i passed a fruit’n’veg shop called get fresh on my way home). or the new amanda blank track.

the last three are all available to download, guilt free, at rcrd lbl. it’s awesome. obviously i have no problem sending money in the direction of artists i love, but when you can get tracks for free it’s even better. holla.
