like you ain’t heard, chromeo are playing dublin tomorrow. the last time they played ireland i was busy trying to hassle diplo for an interview, so missed their show. pretty annoyed, but such is life. you know some of the best things with the chromeo name attached are remixes? every time they put something out, they really get the best there is both to complement and to rework their sound.

yeah i’m going to edinburgh to hang out in cool old-style cinemas and eat lots of greggs and dress up as mark zuckerberg for halloween.
i already mentioned that awesome ra podcast, but there’s more amazing halloween-themed mix/podcast dealyos to check out this weekend while you pretend to play with ouija boards and whatever. there’s this awesome old mix boy 8-bit did a few years back called Halloween Special!!! Oooh Sppoky Sounds!!, i remember listening to it in the hmv in preston at some that definitely wasn’t halloween, but simply because it popped up next in my “mixes” folder – i tend to tag all my dj mixes as “mixes” so they all end up in the same place in my ipod, but that means that i’ll have a mix i made followed by diplo or erol or, as happened, boy 8-bit. i don’t care though, it’s such a good mix it’ll work any time. it’s all creaking doors, creepy vocal samples and chilling sounds and songs. after sidetracked i went to the good bits to see boy 8-bit. it’s always funny watching this long-haired dude in a death metal tee rock out to dance music. but when you think that guy is the man behind such impeccable productions as baltic pine and that remix of florence and the machine, it makes a lot more sense. he even dropped joe and will ask?‘s the rusty pig, which is gas as i’d always thought it shared stylistic tendencies with the boy’s remix of mars. there were a lot more people present than at his show at the twisted pepper last year, which is great, but he really deserves much more attention and credit for his top-notch tracks and perfect djing. boy 8-bit, i salute you.
it’s funny how when people end up in a club that really isn’t for them, they try to make out like they’re not the one with the problem. last night at transmission i had a pair of girls come up to me and repeatedly ask for: pop music; songs with words; songs people know; songs people can dance to. at this stage of the night i had already played tracks by boys noize, daft punk and the chemical brothers, so it wasn’t like i was digging my tunes from the depths of obscurity. while the club wasn’t as full as i’ve seen it at present, the dancefloor was by no means empty, and the majority of those on the floor seemed to be enjoying themselves, what with the odd “ooee ooee ooh” chant and some very happy dancing faces.
i understand that when one pays into a venue one can expect that the dj is there to entertain you. i’m relatively new to this game, so i’m not above at least listening to requests. i’ve talked the ear off plenty of djs in my time. at the same time, if you arrive at a night that isn’t playing the sort of music you like, you can’t expect the music policy to shift entirely because you don’t like what you hear. i’m a huge fan of jay-z, have been for over a decade, but i’m not about to play run this town because one girl in the crowd thinks boy 8-bit is “shit”.
i know i’m not the first dj to express this sentiment, and i certainly won’t be the last. i might seem like i’m running off some righteous indignation, and to an extent i am. that said, i couldn’t help but laugh at the situation. especially when the stuck on repeat vocals kicked in and one of the complainers recognised it and, thus, waved her hands in the air and started dancing. maybe playing all 9 minutes of alexander robotnick‘s epic remix was asking a bit much…
anyway, this is pretty much what i played.
