a few weeks ago i got an email from ms valerie park distro, an online store out of olympia, wa (that’s washington state, for those of us not from the united states). they sell everything from indie folk and ambient to breakcore and noise, all from the surrounding north-west. that’s quite a large remit, but that’s not to say there isn’t quality to be found across that spectrum. listening to the 20-track sampler they sent, i was taken aback by the breadth of material on offer, even more so than just reading the list of genres on a page. that’s why it took me so long to getting around to writing about the tunes.
the tracks below really stood out to me – post-bmore chiptronica, 60s-style guitar pop, good old experimental idm, synth-pop, some sort of psychotic take on daisy daisy that’d put hal to shame in the terror stakes (that’s the plunderphonics), and some gorgeous ambient drone. in fact, that last one deserves a special mention. gkfoes vjgoaf is a psych project from a berkeley-based dude called sean, who uploads his material to mediafire and sells it on tape. i love it. if you like these tracks, visit ms valerie park – get on their mailing list here – and be sure to check out the artists’ own pages too.
