get down with the philly sound

i’ve really been feeling an older sort of sound lately. there’s only so far electro can take you right now, so along with new albums from unkle, lcd soundsystem and holy f*ck, i’ve really been digging this compilation put together by dimitri from paris. it brings together some great disco-before-disco tracks, a load of gorgeous teddy pendergrass (rip) songs, both solo and with harold melvin and the blue notes, and then, on disc two, dimitri goes one better and puts his own stamp on them all. my own personal favourite is his rework of the trammps’ the night the lights went out. see more snippets on his soundclouds, and check out the wicked videos on the album’s site.

along similar lines then, i was delighted to find this boot in my inbox from the good people of solid bump. white girl lust went and put together an edit of prince’s wanna be your lover for sxsw, and now they’ve shared it with the rest of the world. go forth and multiply.

“Back with info about ‘Senior’!” – well it’s about bleedin’ time

Back with info!
So… Regarding the release of Senior. As you correctly have noted, we promised you a release this April. We would like to start by apologizing for any false expectations this statement created. We love you, and we would never purposely misinform you. You see, instead of the release actually happening in April, a lot of other things happened.

Long story short, the toppling of the record industry finally rippled its way into our universe. As you all know, record companies have been having an “interesting” time lately, to say the least. Because of this, to ensure the best possible release scenario for Senior, we have gone through many changes on exactly who we’re releasing it with.

But now it’s all come together.

The album will be released at the end of August. And, even better, for those of you who live in places records are not released on time (and for everyone else too), we will also make the album available here on this website!

All in all, even though the extra wait is boring/ bad/ painful, this should be seen as good news. Senior is a very special release to us, and we would never release it without making sure it was in the best possible hands, when it comes to record companies and distribution. In a way, it’s almost fitting that it being a truly unique album, it would have a difficult start in life.

a sunny day

i’m not sure why, but this track has been in my head a lot the past while. i think at the right moment it could work on some balmy night this summer – watch this space. i first came across it on a free cd with muzik back in 01, back when everything roger sanchez touched seemed to turn to gold, but it was on yoshiesque 2 later that year that it really made sense to me. i think i’ll be digging out that mix pretty soon actually. for now, enjoy it in the sunshine, while it lasts. oh and disregard the e, it’s just called samba

do i really have to blog?

it’d be rude not to. anyway i just saw this last night and, even though it’s, like, so last year, i felt i had to post it.

bleep-ing great

self plug here. the good folks at squeaky bleeps asked me to put together a mix, so i duly obliged. check it out here.

enjoi it kid

Enjoy it now kid, when you’re older you’ll WISH they were putting that thing in your mouth.

stuff what is out

it’s great when artists you like give away stuff for free. one such artist is a-trak. a few years ago he impressed us all with dirty south dance, that peculiar combination of electro and rap, and now he’s done it again with dirty south dance 2. i’m not quite sure how impressed i am second time round, but it’s definitely worth a listen, and will most likely bring a smile to your face at least once. hearing diddy rapping again is also a trip! just bear one thing in mind: “if you choose to download the audio in Ogg Vorbis format you’re a weirdo”.

another great act, haido/transmission favourite shadow dancer, has put together a couple of exclusive mixes of late. one was for the aforementioned transmission blog, and the latest is to herald the southwest four weekend in this coming august. you have to register to the sw4 site to get the mix, but that’s certainly a trial worth enduring. i mean, check out this tracklist! oh and if you haven’t already, check out the lads’ sound and mixclouds, one full of demos and the other full of mixes new and old. a veritable treasure trove.

norwegian wood

my weekend (and some) in oslo was a bizarre experience. i don’t know where to begin really. well, i’ll start here. whatever else happened over the weekend, that lent it a nice glossy sheen. it wasn’t that it wasn’t a great weekend, it was just a weird one. oslo is weird, man.

friday, we kind of got to grips with things. like the cost of everything. damn! two drinks for €20, ok. wow. well, it was never going to be a boozy holiday, we don’t really do that together for some reason. ah well. saturday, we checked out the small but charming film museum, as well as the astrup fearnley museum of modern art. one of the most striking pieces of work here was michael jackson and bubbles, a striking sculpture by jeff koons. it really has to be seen to be believed. we also took a wander on, over and around the relatively newly built opera house. it’s a beautiful building, and, despite some fears of slipping, probably my favourite thing in the city.

oslo calling

so i’m going away for the weekend, hitting up the norwegian capital for the first time. the closest i’ve been to scandinavia before was when i spent a few fleeting moments on a beach in tallinn, so i’m pretty excited. ahead of my journey, i’m going to post a few videos vaguely related to that part of the world.

ok, so eli isn’t norwegian, but if oslo is half as beautiful as this slow and dreamy homage, i think i’ll enjoy my few days spent there.

don’t miss me too much.
