2005

yes on the last day of this year i’m posting the latest in my series of mixes that go some way towards encapsulating what this paste decade meant to me in terms of music, well, from a clubbing point of view at least. 2005 was a strange year – most of my clubbing was spent in what you might call “indie discos”, so i didn’t always get to hear some of the tracks i’ve included. but hey, i damn sure listened to them at home. so i’ve included a few tracks from the rockier side of my clubbing history – interpol, arcade fire, the killers, you know. it was in this year that a new form of dance music seemed to be taking shape – 2manydjs had already wowed the world with as heard on radio soulwax a few years before, but their nite versions album and tour(s) blew that out of the water in my opinion. we also had the debut album from lcd soundsystem, as well as a return from daft punk which, though arguably not as good as the duo’s previous two albums, paved the way for their mindblowing tour a year later.

bye, guy

right then

first of all i finally made my 2005 mix, just needs a bit of tweaking and it should be up soon, either late tonight or at some point tomorrow. i skipped 04 because it was a bit pants. secondly, i’ve decided to actually list my favourite songs of the year. quelle horreur… that will come tomorrow too. for now, enjoy my favourite song about rain (it’s foul here) and a big shiny poster with my name on it.

you might have noticed a track in the mix i posted last week by a delightfully-named act – dakunt, on get flavor records. i honestly can’t remember how i found that particular gem, but just this week they’ve released the k danca ep. as well as t’a surdou, it also features some remixes by current favourite myd, as well as dublin’s hottest producer lorcan mak. to herald this release, they’ve put together a wee promo pack with a few tracks to whet your appetite for the full ep. you can buy it at juno and trackitdown, and itunes too as far as i’m aware. check it out. lovely snarling tribal angry shiz. rar.

will no doubt play one of these at transmission’s new year’s eve party – be there.

mixmas

it’s chrrrriiiiiiiiiistmas… all over the world tonight. this is a weird one. my internet – for whatever reason – is acting up like crazy, dragging out facebook chats, making downloads interminable, and generally being rather douche-like. so i’ve nothing new to upload for you. to be even a little bit festive, i’ve got what i think is quite a nice mix to bop to over this holiday period. it’s something i put together a while ago, i think it’s due a cd pressing, and will at some stage be given out at transmission. for now, you can download away to your heart’s content.

i wanted to make something that would both represent what the club is about, and give a flavour of what i like myself. so while the bulk of the mix is comprised of tracks from 2008, it’s peppered with classics from years gone by. i also wanted to include at least on irish act (big up schizofonics) and focus on people who have played at transmission before. eli escobar‘s glass house and joe and will ask?‘s fabric of win are two of my favourite tunes from this year, and at the other end of the spectrum tracks from dj rasoul and plastikman hopefully show that i’m not completely without roots.

it’s in split tracks, so you can shove it on your ipod and not have to worry about haido scrobbling too much, you can lash it on a cd and bump it in your car. do it.

bia for the soul

ended up somehow djing for a brief period in bia bar last night. good fun. most of the crowd were djs – you know how it is – so imagine my shame when one of my cds started skipping… i’d even spent half an hour getting from 128 down to 124, and sure enough the first track i find and throw in is 130… fml… anyway. i was pretty happy i got to play security – it’s been kicking around on a cd for a few months now so it’s about time i’ve played it!

empire of the sun – walking on a dream (treasure fingers remix)
uffie – mcs can kiss (zombie disco squad remix)
the beat club – security
tiga – pleasure from the bass (joakim remix)
eli escobar – glass house
cut copy – future (chromeo remix)
fully fitted – 50 ways

after this i went over to the twisted pepper for switch – alas, due to disastrous weather conditions he wasn’t able to make it over. nonetheless, mr jones residents shortie and frank sweeney rocked the place – the crowd was insanely up for it and the lads did not disappoint. boom.

now it’s back to work and the real world for me…

this is not a top 10 of the decade

everyone’s making charts and lists right now, websites, blogs, magazines, newspapers, they’re all at it. i like the idea of having a list of x and y but i just get so overwhelmed trying to quantify and then qualify everything that i invariably give up. last year rather than a list of songs or albums i made a list of the people in the industry (as it were) who really made an impact on my year. see here. this year’s dilemma is further compounded by the fact that IT’S THE END OF A DECADE and all that malarkey. so you have to make ANOTHER list for the last 10 years. i wonder how many people are going back to their nine previous best ofs and picked what was number one on that list, and how many people are retrospectively donning their rose-tinted glasses, or picking what they still listen to, or something else along those lines. i tried to think of a list recently and i fired off, after about 40 seconds’ deliberation, something that looked like this….

radiohead – kid a (2000)[2003]
wilco – yankee hotel foxtrot (2002)[2006]
boards of canada – geogaddi (2002)[2005]
jay-z – the blueprint (2001)[2001]
gang gang dance – saint dymphna (2008)[2008]
fleet foxes – fleet foxes (2008)[2008]
sufjan stevens – illinoise (2005)[2005]
unkle – end titles redux (2008)[2009]
eminem – the marshall mathers lp (2000)[2000]
death cab for cutie – transatlanticism (2003)[2005]

you may be wondering what the figure in the square brackets represents. given my rant above, for full disclosure i’ve included the year i first heard that album. now in hindsight, i think i should take out the unkle album and replace it with panda bear’s person pitch from 2007, which i heard in 2007. one great thing i can say about all of the albums above is that i own every one of them (and the panda bear one too). with the exception of the jay-z, eminem and unkle albums, which i bought upon release, i had either borrowed or downloaded every one of them, but i was so impressed/moved by each one that i felt it warranted me parting with my hard-earned cash.

as i said, i came up with this list without putting much thought into it. where’s funeral? where’s discovery? where’s the greatest? where’s yoyoyoyoyo? where’s either lcd soundsystem or sound of silver? where’s this year’s favourite, the future will come?

it’s just so pointless really. and what’s the point of all of these lists? is it for the artist, so that they will gain a new catchment audience? surely the readers of any given list will already be au fait with the contents of that list. and if not, well the writer has messed up there. there is a rather large element of preaching to the converted involved, let’s be honest.

bleurgh anyway. so ignore the above list – you probably know/love/hate it all already. here’s my favourite mashup of the year. yes, i used the m-word.

Kris Menace & The Dream – Walking On Lightning (U-Tern Blend)

(jack) beats staying in

wowsers. last night was pretty insane. probably the biggest crowd i’ve ever seen at transmission. jack beats absolutely wrecked things. so so good. i arrived to find i was coming on after the little-known jon averill – so no pressure there!

i kinda tried to keep things pretty upbeat, but without going too hard into either obscurity or heavy bangers. think i did ok – special shouts go to schizofonics and chaos dans le cbd – both of their tracks went off.

also – jan driver‘s rat alert as football style singalong – who knew?!

Boy 8-Bit – Baltic Pine
Alan Braxe & Fred Falke – Intro
Lykke Li – I’m Good. I’m Gone (Fred Falke Remix)
Chromeo – Needy Girl (Lifelike Remix)
MGMT – Of Moons, Birds And Monsters (Holy Ghost! Remix)
White Girl Lust – Blood
Jan Driver – Rat Alert
Major Lazer – Keep It Going Louder (Tom Stevens Remix)
Dances With White Girls – Everyone’s Got To Make A Living
Fully Fitted – 50 Ways
Armand van Helden – Playmate (ft Lacole ‘Tigga’ Campbell & Roxy Cottontail)
Schizofonics – 88
Chaos Dans Le CBD Feat. Tommie Pickles – Tesh & Maccas (Original Mix)
The Chemical Brothers – Star Guitar (Pete Heller’s Expanded Mix)
Myd – Train to Bamako
