i’m just out of inglourious basterds, quentin tarantino’s seventh feature film, and i’m simultaneously bursting with ideas and lost for words. the first thing that comes to mind is that it’s simply awesome. as i said to my father, “you wouldn’t like it” – it’s bloody, tasteless, and very in your face. but hey, it’s tarantino, so you expect that much. as usual, his dialogue is snappy, but this time it’s coming at you in french, english and german – with a tiny bit of bad italian for good measure. as usual the film is full of visual references to earlier works, but as the war movie is not my forte, it’s not for me to pick them out.

while some of the performances are a little 2d (why not, the film is about film rather than characters), there are several that deserve special mention. daniel brühl is charming as the war hero turned silver screen idol, brad pitt is surprisingly effective as the leader of the eponymous basterds, and michael fassbender’s stiff upper lip couldn’t be stiffer, least of all when he’s attempting to pass off as a gerry, old chap. but the stand out for me (and no doubt many others) is christoph waltz, who is beguilingly manipulative as the dreaded “jew hunter.” chosen apparently as much for his flair for languages as his acting prowess, he excels in both capacitity.

the film, which centres on a small team of american jews who go about scalping nazis in occupied france, may be well seen as an exercise in revisionist wish-fulfilment (eli roth, who plays the “bear jew”, has referred to it as “kosher porn”). that said, it’s very difficult to sit through any tarantino film without a smile, a laugh or a genuine cry of shock crossing your face. inglourious basterds is no different. and while it may not be the director’s masterpiece, it’s certainly been the most entertaining film i’ve seen in a long time.
