the elite

i haven’t listened to much baile funk lately – it’s not something you can spend much time with or else you’ll go a little crazy. but there was a time when i’d play favela on blast and favela strikes back all day long. tonight i watched elite squad, or tropa de elite, a 2007 film about a renegade police force determined to cut down violence in the favelas in advance of a visit from the pope. it’s brutal and unflinching, and one review saw it as “a one-note celebration of violence-for-good that plays like a recruitment film for fascist thugs.” delightful.

but it kicks off with some exhilarating baile beats as a few cops go into the slums in a bid to take someone out – like most of the best films nowadays, it operates on a flashback structure, and after the hit goes wrong and the two cops are almost out of ammo we’re taken back six months and watch the action as it build up to this point. this scene reminded me how fun baile can be, and with that in mind i offer you some tracks i found in my baile folder from way back. the first is montagem the smith, which puts bigmouth strikes again over those signature baile beats – according to his interview on triple j a few years ago, this was the first baile track diplo ever heard – and the second is, well all the info i have is that it’s called mulher feia mc bobo and it’s by cabide dj. it’s a take on do wah diddy diddy that i gather predates bonde do rolê‘s funk da esfiha. enjoy.

Cabide DJ – Mulher Feia Mc Bobo

don’t forget to read that diplo interview on discodust, and check out brazilian producer edu k‘s remix of major lazer‘s hold the line – probably my favourite so far.
