a movie with no plot

last night at sidetracked i played one of my favourite sets in recent times. it helped that there seemed to be a big crowd spilling into crawdaddy from the m.i.a. show in tripod next door. then it was off to the twisted pepper for a great set from cooly g. big up to ignored playaz, and i look forward to their next gig. tonight it’s off to the sugar club for chilly gonzales. there’s a great interview with the man on nialler9.

i like to hit it early, like i’m in a hurry

chromeo turned into a pretty late one on thursday, and i was in work at 10.30 this morning, so i was never going to be able to stay long at sidetracked last night. i did make sure to play some fun tunes though. daire was pretty excited that i was playing a haçienda-style set, though with classixx and missy elliott in there it was never going to be totally mad(chester). daire asked me to make a mix out of these tunes, and, time permitting, i might just do it. oh hai readers

i went to a screening of the room on friday night. watching it in that setting is a world away from watching it at home on your laptop. you can avoid the boring bits by taking toilet breaks and going to the bar, and, but at the same time you have to put up with a lot of bizarre, paranoid and misogynistic ranting from attendees. “it’s because you’re a woman!” and “evil cancer bitch!” are just some of the random utterings i heard. such is life i guess, weird attracts weird.

on a normalcy tip, i played an early set at sidetracked as i had to leg it on to the sugar club. i tried to switch between awkward moody disco and poppier stuff – hence playing the virgins. daire loved the u-tern remix, which is ace.

Daft Punk – Something About Us

The Cure – Why Can’t I Be You (Young Edits Drugged Out Version)

LCD Soundsystem – I Can Change
Lykke Li – Little Bit (Loving Hand Remix)
Mark Ronson & The Business INTL – Bang Bang Bang (U-Tern’s Disco Dub)

far from home

friday night, as i repeatedly shouted on twitter, was my first night in the world of promotion. it was a bit of fun. i got nicer beer for the djs than usual, i had two djs play slightly longer sets (ok so i was one of them) and generally the night was pretty good. seth troxler was playing next door so there were decent numbers floating about. the first hour and a half was some good hip-hop from shane gormley and ciaran martin – think dungeon family, j dilla etc – before ciaran took it to indiepophouse mode. think hot chip, lcd etc. new boy gianni played more fun tunes for an hour, before adam fogarty of rte pulse’s breakonomics took over and showed us dubstep 2010 in his eyes. i’ve actually just been on to him asking for deets of some of the tracks he played, so that’s always a good sign. since i was playing for a little bit longer than usual, i decided to go a little bit deeper than usual, but still trying to keep it fun. mid-way through mr adam keni was having a gander through my cds and jumped on to play love story. 2002 was pretty special.

back in the zone again

after a few days in manchester i came home and went straight out to sidetracked in the chocolate bar. guests included jevan neilan, frankie grimes and sean redahan, with myself taking things home. i’ve played sidetracked loads now, but never as late as this. it was mainly a fun set with a bit of cheese thrown in for good measure. something good can work went down like a treat, and people leaving other rooms seemed to enjoy a bit of outkast. while i was away i picked up a load of good music and happened upon some brilliant ads, headlines and general observations. more on those later.

Daft Punk – Digital Love
OutKast – Ms Jackson

new stuff from me

i’ve been busy with music new and old lately, and i’ve put a few mixes together. the most recent was for sidetracked, that ever-so-groovy friday night dealio in the chocolate bar in dublin. it’s a game of two halves, as i start off with some more groovy stuff like holmes price‘s unbelievably good cover of the juan maclean‘s human disaster and the classic shep pettibone remix of new order’s true faith. then it goes a bit garagey, with some mj cole and todd edwards, before a deep and slightly irreverent finale thanks to carl craig, and his relentless desire for chicken noodle soup. i’ll be playing sidetracked from 2 next friday, so come along and wave/say hi/boogie.

sidetracked bank holiday EXTRAVAGANZA

yupp, i used the e word. it’s a big deal. sidetracked has been running things between 8 and 11 on a friday since the beginning of the year, nicely leading into trainwreck, but tonight it’s sidetracked all night long. jamie clarke, frank sweeney, colin perkins, jevan neilan, quigo, kevin aiken, sophie de vere, jeff courtney flynn, shane morrisey, sarah mckenna, james o’donohue, just daire and myself. expect some of this.

Aurra – Baby Love (VDRK Special Disco Edit) by VDRK

ayyyyo

i’m tired of giving apologieeees. really doe. mad busy. work is getting pretty interesting which is cool. but life is happening. i’ve got a rake of sets coming up, mainly transmission and sidetracked, but i’m also playing orlando’s true stories night next week. i’ve just put together a short hip-hop mix for him, pending his approval it should be available for general consumption in the coming days. alas i must take a step back from blurging over the next few days. please forgive me. i’ll be back by the weekend with new tunes and some dj-friendly tools and tracks. peace out.

un/pear/sun

sidetracked last night was, as ever, a lot of fun. i had a friend who’s not into djing join me in the booth, so i got to explain what i do and how things work and so on. things really got interesting when frank sweeney showed up with serato. frank followed my pop-disco set with a killer slow hip-hop set – some dilla, some flylo, a couple of awesome b.cause edits, it was a joy to watch. if i can be half that good at true stories in a few weeks i’ll be doing well!

after sidetracked i headed down to see ewan pearson at nightflight. as fellow dj jevan described it, ewan started a bit housey, then got techy and glitchy, and finished up with what i’ll call a lot of “reach for the lasers” tunes. you know it’s a good set when you don’t know anything but you still love it – and then towards the end he whipped out this monster…

Mykill – Love Story
Crazy P – Bumcop
Tensnake – Coma Cat
Hot Chip – I Feel Better (Den Haan Remix)
Róisín Murphy – Overpowered
