noria pt ii

since i’m on that slow disco tip right now, figured i’d keep going in that direction… as you probably know i’ve been a big fan of myd’s work since he showed up on my radar back in august. proper exciting ravey stuff with tribal leanings and a big dose of fun. one such track was noria, which i blogged in november. this one was almost angry and uplifting at the same time, so i was eager to hear what the hit meteor remix, featured on the club cheval blog today, would sound like. well, it’s on a different planet. it slows down the main riff to a pumping disco groove, with a deep and suggestive bassline. it’s got this weird mid-section that has spacey-echoey sounds over which sit a sort of bright eyes-esque telephone conversation, which is subsequently chopped to pieces over grinding industrial effects – it’s not called carpenter remix for nothing.

EDIT: excuse me… further listens reveal blade runner samples…

check it out.

also, i was horrified when i first heard owl city’s fireflies – i felt like i’d just eaten a bag of sugar. but this leo zero remix is pretty awesome – enough reverb to make the original vocals almost indiscernible, and add a whopping 80s kick and some delightful syncopated synths. you can see a preview here.

or maybe hear me play it tonight ;)

you might have noticed a track in the mix i posted last week by a delightfully-named act – dakunt, on get flavor records. i honestly can’t remember how i found that particular gem, but just this week they’ve released the k danca ep. as well as t’a surdou, it also features some remixes by current favourite myd, as well as dublin’s hottest producer lorcan mak. to herald this release, they’ve put together a wee promo pack with a few tracks to whet your appetite for the full ep. you can buy it at juno and trackitdown, and itunes too as far as i’m aware. check it out. lovely snarling tribal angry shiz. rar.

will no doubt play one of these at transmission’s new year’s eve party – be there.

gravity rides everything

wow i’ve been pretty busy this past while. working has actually taken it out of me more than i had anticipated. not that i’m complaining – having a job is great, especially at a time like this.

i went to see modest mouse on tuesday, and boy did they put on a good show. the setlist was great – as far as i was concerned they kind of went 50/50 in terms of stuff i knew and stuff i didn’t. there was one song i’d been hoping to hear which they skipped, but that’ll happen at every gig so i’m not too mad. plus i saw them play it before so grand like. the gig was followed by some late pints in sin é with the good people from fuzzy logic (if you haven’t yet, you should check it out), lots of chats about jim morrison and jack kerouac and other such things.

the next morning i was woken up by the postman ringing the doorbell – he was delivering, among other things, my drop the lime 12″, with added classixx remix, as arranged by nialler9. so kudos to niall and the bacardi b-live family. i’m in the process of ripping it now, though i think i may have got the speed wrong….

this week i’ve been lucky enough to get some great stuff in my inbox. top of the list is the remix package for myd‘s train to bamako. i’ve been loving his work ever since i first heard the original track back in august, and the remixes do their best to add something new while keeping the manic tribal flair of the original intact. my favrouite is from monsieur monsieur, who recently won the peanuts club remix competition. ones to watch i’d say. for your pleasure i offer you the canblaster remix. also the artwork is the maddest and coolest thing i’ve seen in some time. the package is available at trackitdown.

finally major props to my boy bobby analog – he’s just moved down south to melbourne – jealous or what. after perfecting the art of discofied remixes, he’s moved onto darker and angrier things – i mean this track is called st. kilda bass…. it’s a banger.

Bobby Analog – St. Kilda Bass

ps watch out for the 88 ep from schizofonics next year. runnnnnnnnnnnin tings.

what the hell’s a noria?!

mydbanner

i always get excited when a new track from myd arrives in my inbox. noria, the latest offering from le mec de club cheval starts off before bringing in some cascading synths that remind me of joe and will ask?‘s insane the rusty pig. there’s a moment about two minutes in that makes me think of crouching tiger, hidden dragon – a bizarre, minute percussive break that sounds like bamboo sticks being dropped in a courtyard.

this track is trippy and hypnotic, but unlike most tracks that carry such a label, it’s in a major key, so it’s more likely to bring a smile to your face than drive you wild. it’s simple, but it hits all the right buttons.

holidays in congo

elephant

i haven’t really had a holiday this year. yeah i’ve had weekends in edinburgh and london (the latter for field day) but a full-on holiday has, unfortunately, been out of the equation. so i’m living vicariously through the music on this one. last week i expressed my love for myd‘s train to bamako, but now he’s bringing a smile to my face with his remix of rainbow arabia‘s holidays in congo. kuduro riddims, squelchy basslines, and the nicest parts of the original track’s mixture of grunge-meets-world-pop – the band themselves have described it as “fun and punchy.” let it into your life and watch it brighten up your day.

as is hopefully clear from my posts, i try to be pretty eclectic with my tastes. lately i’ve been playing lots of this balearic nu-disco – it’s so funky and summery and nice! – but another sub-genre which is pleasing my ears is what could be called the electro-tribal scene. it’s a sound that offers limitless possibilities, with its relentless use of heavy bass, rattling percussion and eerily dramatic and atmospheric sub-saharan influences. the range of excellent tracks is a joy to behold, stretching from michel cleis‘ epic la mezcla and l-vis 1990‘s staggering remix of crystal fighters, right up to brand new stuff from up and comers like harry benson and his latest track kudzu.

another new name on this burgeoning section of the market is myd, whose train to bamako has been getting praise from people like teki latex, radioclit and brodinski (whose bugged out mix is an essential purchase). with its combination of wonky bleeps and basslines and traditional african chants and instruments, it’s sure to bring a smile to your face. to hear the track in context, have a listen to his massala myd sauce mix, which is full of similarly powerful tracks. keen as i am to show my love for armand, it’s nice to be able to post a mix with jesse rose‘s incredible playmate remix. clearly this boy’s got taste.
