i’ve just been reminded of the awesome over-the-top-ness of missy’s late-90s early-00s videos, almost exclusively directed by hype williams. take hot boyz for example. smokey abandoned spaces that look like mad max but everyone’s wearing their freshest, gaudiest gear, well, except for timbo, who seems to be standing up on the podium in some sort of christmas cardigan. and mouthing along about how great “hot boyz” are. there are just a few days to go to the give it socks festival, taking place in the eastpoint business park in clontarf, dublin. i’m fortunate to be one of those playing, and i look forward to sharing the bill with some of the best talent in dublin and beyond, including lorcan mak, whisperjack aka barry farrell, my fellow sidetracked resident jevan neilan and those upstarts two charming men. the latter headlined transmission last weekend, can check out their set below.
meanwhile, i’m loving everything from the man like tensnake lately, and he’s just put out an in the house compilation on defected records. banging ‘funky’ house at its finest you might think, but with the likes of lindstrøm and prins thomas, mount kimbie and armando on the tracklist, it’s definitely worth a listen. i’ve only just discovered his masterful remix of the faint‘s battlehymn for children, have a listen to this delightful rerub below.

i haven’t blogged in, like, a week, which is a crazy long time. my excuse is that this time last week i was in a field in belgium, and i deigned not to bring my iphone with me. i didn’t even tweet for five whole days, which must be some kind of record. while i was there i saw some crap shows, some ok shows, some good shows and some great shows. i won’t call out the crap or ok people. there’s a full sort of rundown here, but i’ll just tell you what i loved.
plastikman – rolling thunderous acid techno bleep apocalypse renaissance man – djs who were thoroughly entertaining didn’t just play what every other dj played (ie no pon de floor, no afrojack, no swedish house mafia) flying lotus – this was a weird one. he sort of laced through a bizarre set of hip-hop/rock/glitch/dubstep, moving from nas is like to idioteque in the space of about eight minutes. beyond that, he seemed to be having more fun playing tracks off his laptop than most ones-and-twos djs i’ve ever seen. i’ve been busy with music new and old lately, and i’ve put a few mixes together. the most recent was for sidetracked, that ever-so-groovy friday night dealio in the chocolate bar in dublin. it’s a game of two halves, as i start off with some more groovy stuff like holmes price‘s unbelievably good cover of the juan maclean‘s human disaster and the classic shep pettibone remix of new order’s true faith. then it goes a bit garagey, with some mj cole and todd edwards, before a deep and slightly irreverent finale thanks to carl craig, and his relentless desire for chicken noodle soup. i’ll be playing sidetracked from 2 next friday, so come along and wave/say hi/boogie.
i did a weekly chart here for a while, but some time around september i guess it fell by the wayside. then i started to do one for resident advisor (the most recent one is here). but then when i get to thinking what i want to chart, it’s just all a bit….. raaaanghya. yeah, that is an official term for frustration and laziness.
then i wake up to this. white girl lust are getting in on this ra chart business, and they go one better by putting together a mix of their top 10, so you don’t have to go looking for tracks. at your fingertips. nice. i’m especially excited about their remix of ghosts of venice’sher, forthcoming on solid bump records. in the meantime, this is my latest chart. sorry i ain’t got no mix.
yupp, i used the e word. it’s a big deal. sidetracked has been running things between 8 and 11 on a friday since the beginning of the year, nicely leading into trainwreck, but tonight it’s sidetracked all night long. jamie clarke, frank sweeney, colin perkins, jevan neilan, quigo, kevin aiken, sophie de vere, jeff courtney flynn, shane morrisey, sarah mckenna, james o’donohue, just daire and myself. expect some of this.
i don’t know what happened there. is it tuesday already? and june? wow. well my excuse is that i had a busy weekend and stuff. you know, the combination of clubbing, planning a wedding, day-to-day domesticity and plain old work can be pretty time consuming. not that i’m complaining – life is good and the weather is warm. so this, which landed in the past 24 hours, is perfect. it’s another great addition to the white light series, from villa. it’s full of soul, and i’m talking about that painful, makes you cry kind of soul. the sort you want to listen to when it’s so hot you don’t want to move, and just want to sit in the shade and reflect.
“The White Light mixes are, ultimately, about two things: music and space.” Thats what the website tells me. In that case white might be the color of music, because going through my record music collection – everything seems to go about music and space. At first i had a playlist of over 4 hours of music, I started over again, inspired by the second theme. “White Light will always be about night driving” I read. So i made three categories: Landscape Driving, Autobahn Driving & City Driving. Upload your ipod, take your car and join us on this ride.
